THLiVE

Postby homeboy » Sat Mar 13, 2010 3:35 pm

i just realized there's no thread about thlive being down since february 28.
obviously we will need an alternative, if it makes sense to have one at least.

what do the iSL forums need to make it attractive enough to you to stay at on a regular basis?
or do you think with thlive being taken down the whole thps community died and there's no point in trying to create an alternative to it whatsoever?

discuss!

attractive as far as cosmetics go is not an issue for me. the way it is now it's easy to navigate and all that, so i'm fine by that.

even though i don't really play anymore i'd like a place to post, preferably this place seing as the admins have proven to be serious and devoted about the community in the past.

i still think thps needs some forum. one of the main downsides of here, is the fact that this site was never really finished or released, so a lot of people probably still dont know about it. for the people that do still play thps, well they will eventually learn of it, but there was a significant portion of older thlive players that certainly died with that site

for now we just need to advertise this i guess, the site looks fine and the isl video should help

Maybe you should try to get the poster info at the left side.

Don't know about how you guys think of it, but i think it's quite annoying this way.

i agree with the domain, this has been an issue for me too. when we thought of a domain we wanted to get globalskaters.net but it was already in use :(

posterinfo at the left? not sure, i like it this way, but i wouldn't mind changing it either. some more opinions about that would be appreciated.

about mc: i think the mc forums could use an overhaul, too colorful, the forums seem a little confusing. also a reason why certain people don't visit their forums. if there'd be a way to combine both forums i'd be happy.

well, about the domain:
the name was close to what we wanted to have, thus i am fairly ok with it.
notice that you could always bookmark this page, in case your cache gets cleared and you are too lazy to type the domainname all the time!

as for moving the poster's info to the left side: i am not sure about that yet...
actually i like it this way as well. that doesn't say i'm not open for ideas, though.
i'll have to take it into consideration, if more people support this.

I think basti wouldn't mind merging the 2 forums and changing the colors a bit.

as for the domain, it doesn't bother me to be honest. if you really have to change it, try skaterISLand.net or an other combined name. loved the jtopia.de

I guess it would help if ksk put link to your site on thlive.net along with existing good bye message. I think there was something like that when tXo died. Is that possible?

i've just written a huge text as a comment to ztreek's vid on eps (http://www.eps-clan.com/vids/thpsdead.wmv.htm)
the text got messed up on there and i wasted too much time to only post it there so here it is again, let me know what you think.

hey guys. it's been a while that i came across this site but whatever.
first off: lol at ztreek making *official* decisions and announcements.

but all in all you're right, this is basically the same me and many others were discussing ingame and on instant messengers the past few weeks.

here's what i think about suggestions given by you guys:

mc forums: a good place that used to be whorer's heaven back in 2006 or so. right now it is sort of inactive but that's not an issue.
the problem is that people who visited thlive are not attracted to sites like muhcrew. why? probably because it's mainly visited by pc players, USED to be a place for whorers which stucks in people's heads, the forums itself might be too colorful and filled with people who only speak half-assed english (nothing wrong about it, just telling the facts). plus: there aren't many options to customize these forums because the forum version is very outdated and not supported anymore. it is possible to transfer the forum's database but the forums-provider that's hosting them is charging a hilarious amount of money (about 100$ to 120$) just for this transfer. obviously that's too much to pay. well, what's the outcome of this? have a look at the forums as they are right now, the design can be changed..and...yeah that's about it. later versions would allow custom scripts that would allow to integrate the forums into the mainsite, create scripts for let's say challenges or tournaments, scripts for uploading...you name it. a huge disadvantage i think.

tho forums: used to be a veryyy nice place similar to thlive. just that cona and his team went inactive and probably lost interest in the games. cona's not gonna pay the bills for stylenation.de and thps-online.net for much longer, so this rather pointless.

oas forums... i don't even remember its domain but whatever, i visited the forums a half year ago or so and it seemed to be active. but looked like the second mc forums in its prime just for thaw players. meaning hardly any "stylers"/improv'ers or players from anything but thaw. don't get me wrong, this was just my first impression. might be good forums but rather unfitting for the kind of community we want to bring together.

eps-clan: as i said, i haven't really visited this site regularly but it has many visitors...but is lacking an integrated forum imo. obviously it's great for video uploading anyways. not sure about this.

isl forums: well, unlike ztreek i will admit that i say this because i am in the clan =P. that's because i know of its current state and abilities.
i think this would be the most fitting forums for the community and a worthy alternative to thlive.

let me quote bamba: "especially when there are no new thps games coming out (at least for pc) to attract new players / get veterans back to be active.
| as most of you probably know we were hosting the SoS tournaments which brought back a lot of inactive veterans and attracted a bunch of new players to be a real part of the community|
"But well maybe i got a wrong overview and there actually are enough interested people out there (hope so :) )."
| well have a look at the players that signed up for one of the tournaments, we weren't even expecting to get half as much players together but the amount of interested people was overwhelming. viewtopic.php?f=4&t=30&p=185#p185 |
"In that case i'd prefer to create a new (neutral) thps-place from scratch instead of trying to revive one of the old ones. But to do so we'd realy need a bunch of interested people and a skilled and motivated team which would develop and lead such a project but well again my hopes for something like that to happen aint that big."
| i think pretty much everything applies to the isl site/forums, the forums have just been re-opened about a week ago. the team consists of pc and ps2 players, meaning both platforms are probably attracted to visit. i don't wanna seem too self-opinionated but i'm sure the soon to be released teamvideo will be great ;).
- we're willing to listen to the people and customize the site and/or the forums
- we're hosting a huge thps video archive including stylenation.de, bungle's oldschool collection and various others
- the new cross-platform thug servers attract ps2 players as well as pc players and give a bunch of people a new reason to play.
now let me quote plum: "I guess it would help if ksk put link to your site on thlive.net along with existing good bye message. I think there was something like that when tXo died. Is that possible?"
i certainly do think so. assi has been a moderator at thlive and most isl members we're all cool with tlt, so i think there's a real chance of this happening.

ok i can't think of any more advantages as of now and am tired of writing this much. but yeah go check out
http://globalskateboarders.net
and give some feedback on the forums!

It's kind of terrible but I don't really care . I kind of feel like most people probably feel the same way. THPS is obviously not completely dead, but it's almost there. It's not just the site, but the last time I really played online was in August, and I saw the same 8-10 people. I played in December for like 20 minutes and 3 people were on. I tried to go on again at another time, and no one was on at all.

I thought it was going to really suck not having thlive to browse through for fun on a daily basis, but in reality, it hasn't even phased me. I don't really talk to anyone from THPS anymore besides Anton, and Diz randomly sends me a message now and then. It's just kind of strange to think that it might not be that much longer until the community is completely dead. I kind of relate this to being in a clan, but a rather large one. I remember when I was in tO, I basically talked to the same people on a daily basis for almost 2 years (before I made it, when I was in, and then quit), and when the clan started dying it really sucked. I thought all the dudes were cool and fun to play with. Almost 3 years later, I'm not in contact with anyone from tO (uNi and tiC are on my Live friends list, but I've never played or talked to him). The last time I spoke with one of them was about 2 years ago. So yeah...I don't know.

I might fire up the PS2 over spring break and see how it goes but I'm not really too anxious to play THPS. The game has become really boring to me.

Even with all that said, part of me hopes it works out somehow.

I think the most important thing is to keep the games alive. THUG2's been so dead recently that I'm not even going on anymore (like everybody else). We need to advertise THPS to potential players, by advertise I mean throwing download links in their faces. I guess there isn't much point in having forums for a somewhat dead series unless we can get more people interested in the games. The easiest way to advertise is probably through youtube by commenting on popular skateboarding/tony hawk ride videos.

I'm only playing THUG2 around 3:00 PM Australian time once or twice a week to see if anybody's on. I'll play a lot more if new players can get into the series, and I'm sure other 'old' players will get back into THPS if they see a lot of new players.

Hi there,
most of you probably wont know me since i never was active in any of the big thps communities and mainly played thaw but anyways im Bamba, nice to meet you.

I read homeboys comment on eps so i went here to give you guys some of the feedback you requested ;)

Since thlive was shut down i tried to follow how things evolve but so far everything seems like usual, couldn't notice any big community movement to one of the forums mentioned at eps but however im running offtopic.

So about globaleskateboarders.net uhm ye first point: the domain. As mentioned before its way to long and in my opinion kinda difficult to write, thats definitely one reason why im visiting this page so rarely - it just wont stay in your mind easily. You said you had prefered "globaleskaters.net" but it was already in use, I just run a whois query and at the moment the domain seems perfectly free to register so i'd suggest you to take a look, with the current domain prices that shouldn't be a big deal.

Next thing to mention would be the homepage.
No offense but to be honest I think that page defenitely need some more work put into.
Technically you should try to create a overall more consistent system and get rid of that frames and administratively make sure that the page doesn't look like its dead. I visited here from time to time (around 4-5 times a year) and every time the first thing i saw was stuff like "function not working yet" or "comming soon" so I naturaly thought nothing would go on here since it dosent seemed like anything were changing.
All in all the whole page just doesn't realy feels comfortable and the workout got a *quick and dirty* touch on it so its not that much fun browsing it.

Btw. sorry for my hard words on you :D I defenitely dont want to blame you for anything and i know that creating websites isn't a easy process but that seemed to be the best way to express my opinions.
At the end i appreciate you for starting such a project and caring about it but i want to suggest you to put some more work into the system itself.

Well so far, i dont think i have anything more to say right now (even though i got a feeling like i forget something >_<) hope i wasn't to harsh and maybe you could think about the stuff i mentioned.

Greetings,
Bamba

P.S. As mentioned on eps, im not the type of guy who is active in many forums and i guess it will be the same for this one so don't expect to see me around here often, but i will for sure continue observing this whole thlive-is-dead-stuff ;)
Bamba
